Description
Carnegia gigantea also known as Saguaro or giant cactus is a relatively fast growing cactus that in its natural habitat can grow to gargantuan heights of 12 metres. Native to the extreme desert climates of the southwestern United States and northern Mexico, the cactus can withstand intense summer heat waves, long periods of drought, and the biting cold and frost of winter. Saguaro is a flowering cactus though the white blooms will not appear until the cactus is 50 to 75 years old. After the flowers have been pollinated, fruit develops. Grow your own Carnegia gigantea from seed!

Saguaro Wine
The bright red Saguaro fruit is used to make Saguaro wine, a beer-like drink. The fresh fruit is mixed with water and allowed to ferment, or boiled to produce a sweet, brown syrup which can be eaten raw. Saguaro wine was traditionally consumed during a yearly rain ceremony by the Tohono O’odham, a Native American tribe of the Sonoran Desert that still honours the cloud summoning rite.
