Description
Acorus calamus, commonly known as sweet flag, is a member of the Arum family. Acorus derives from a Greek word meaning “pupil of the eye”. Calamus derives from a Greek word meaning “reed” and refers to the reed-like appearance of the plant. Calamus grows in wetlands and along river banks throughout North-America, Europe, and Asia. After harvest, calamus is dried and used for a variety of purposes. Due to its stimulating and euphoric properties, calamus is mainly used as a rejuvenating tonic and aphrodisiac. Calamus can help maintain memory and a healthy libido. The herb gives off a sweet, refreshing fragrance that serves well as a breath freshener and as a flavouring in liqueurs like Beerenburg. Native American tribes used calamus for its hallucinogenic effects. The body converts β -asarone, found in calamus, into the amphetamine TMA-2. In his book Pihkal, Dr Shulgin suggests the effects of TMA-2 are similar to mescaline, but without the intensification of colours.
