Background
Damiana or Turnera diffusa is one of the most famous psychoactive herbs. It is assumed that use of the herb dates back to the Aztecs in South America. The on average about 30 cm high, yellow flowered plant occurs from Southern California (Baja) to Argentina. Traditional use of damiana is mainly related to its aphrodisiac properties, not so much for its psychoactive relaxing quality, which only started to gain popularity in the early 20th century. The herbage contains 0.51% essential oil of a greenish colour, two resins, 0.7% arbutin, the bitter substance damianin, tannin, sugar, and albuminoids. The essential oil consists of some twenty substances, of which 1,8-cineol, α-pinene, β-pinene, and para-cymene have been identified.
