Grow your own peyote from seed! Peyote is a small spineless button-like cactus with a taproot. Peyote contains a broad range of psychoactive alkaloids of which mescaline is the main hallucinogenic compound. The term peyote derives from the word peyotl in the Aztec language Nahuatl. Depending on the source peyotl can be translated as either glistening or Divine Messenger. The peyote cactus can be found growing in the wild in limestone rich areas from Mexico to south-west Texas. The cactus bears pink flowers; the flowering period lasts for approximately six months, from March to September. Peyote is one of the slowest growing cacti and won’t be ready for harvest for at least fifteen years. It is possible to increase the growth rate of a peyote cactus by splicing and grafting a peyote button onto a Trichocereus cactus.
