Artemisia absinthium has been consumed since ancient times. Known as wormwood and hierba santa, “sacred herb”, the essential oil distilled from the plant and mixed with alcohol became a fashionable drug in the 19th and early 20th century. Absinthe, the green fairy, was beloved by artists and writers including Vincent van Gogh, Oscar Wilde, Ernest Hemingway, and Toulouse-Lautrec. Absinthe’s strong hallucinogenic effect is primarily due to the high alcohol content. On its own wormwood is calming, relaxing and slightly sedating.
Artemisia absinthium is a shrubby herb found growing naturally throughout Europe. Wormwood contains large quantities of the bitter substance absinthine; the main active alkaloid is thujone. Tuvan shamans in Siberia burn wormwood along with mugwort and other herbs as part of their ancient purifying rituals. In traditional European folk medicine, wormwood was used to treat a variety of ailments from diarrhoea to insomnia.
