Absinthe Kit

Description
Want to make your own Absinthe? Just add 1 litre of high proof liquor, like vodka, to this do it yourself Absinthe kit to transform the liquor into the infamous green drink from the 19th and early 20th century. Back then, the bitter taste of Absinthe was much more pronounced due to the high levels of thujone; the concentration of thujone was about 10 to 100 times greater than it is today. Absinthe was beloved by artists and writers including Vincent van Gogh, Oscar Wilde, Ernest Hemingway, and Toulouse-Lautrec.

Ingredients
Various herbs and spices to make your own fragrant Absinthe: Mentha spicata, Illicium verum, Radix Angelicae, Foeniculum dulce, Coriandrum sativum and, of course, the thujone-containing herb, Artemisia absinthium (Wormwood).

Effect
Absinthe is a renowned, mild hallucinogenic of which thujone is the primary psychoactive substance. Absinthe’s strong effect is primarily due to the high alcohol content. Supposedly, regularly drinking Absinthe leads to a build-up of the active ingredient thujone in the body which is said to intensify the experience. One thing is sure, the Green Fairy that lives in Absinthe will enchant you!

Preparation
The higher the alcohol content, the stronger the Absinthe! Instead of vodka, you could opt for rum. In any case choose liquor with a high alcohol content, at least 40% alcohol by volume. If you add 0.7 litres instead of 1 litre, the distinctive taste and effects of the drink will be stronger due to the relatively high levels of thujone. Steep the wormwood in alcohol for two days. Strain out the wormwood and add all of the remaining herbs and spices. Allow the herbs and spices to steep for about a week, then strain them out.

2-3 cl Absinthe
1 Sugar cube (on the spoon)
2-3 cl water

To prepare Absinthe in the traditional way, place the spoon with the sugar cube on top of the glass containing Absinthe. Slowly drip a few drops of water onto the sugar cube until it dissolves entirely and the water, sugar and Absinthe are combined in the glass below. The other non-traditional way described in the instructions is to pour a few drops of Absinthe onto the sugar cube and set it alight.
