What is cordyceps?
Cordyceps is a genus of parasitic fungi that feeds off the larvae of insects. Cordyceps militaris, the species of cordyceps in Host Defense Cordyceps, naturally occurs in the wild in The Netherlands; its Dutch name is “rupsendoder”, aka caterpillar killer. Cordyceps penetrates the body of hidden and buried butterfly and moth pupae. The dark orange to reddish fruiting body grows from the host pupa to a height of around 2 – 6 cm. Cordyceps militaris fruiting bodies can also be cultivated on grain substrates, so don’t worry, no butterflies were harmed in the making of this product.

For centuries Cordyceps has been used in traditional Chinese and Tibetan medicine to support easy respiration, enhance energy levels and libido. Inhabitants of the Himalayan regions used the fungi as a tonic to support strenuous, high altitude activities. Through clinical trials with daily supplementation for a period of 12 weeks, Cordyceps, specifically the bioactive component cordycepin, has proven useful for increasing oxygen uptake. Cordyceps also contains antioxidants and immune-modulating polysaccharides.

Cordyceps sinensis vs Cordyceps militaris
Though Cordyceps sinensis is the most famous and, in traditional Chinese medicines, the most frequently used member of the Cordyceps genus, studies show that the fruiting bodies and mycelium of Cordyceps militaris contain much higher concentrations of cordycepin.

Host Defense™
Mycologist Paul Stamets, a fungal and mushroom research pioneer, founded Host Defense™. Paul Stamets is at the forefront of groundbreaking scientific research into the use of medicinal mushrooms as nutritional supplements. The mycelium and mushrooms used in Host Defense™ products are grown by Host Defense™ in the United States. All Host Defense™ products are bee-friendly, vegan, USDA Organic (organic) certified, gluten-free and GMO-free.

No Fillers!
Host Defense™ believes in the enormous potential of the entire fungal organism; that’s why Host Defense™ uses myceliated grain, also known as mycelium biomass, in their products. The mushrooms are grown on an organic brown rice substrate. The mushroom mycelium consumes and enzymatically converts the substrate into a new, uniquely active ingredient that supports and complements the health-supporting benefits of the mycelium. Filler is an inactive ingredient that adds weight to the main ingredient, while a vast amount of scientific research and data backs the immunological activity of myceliated biomass.
