Is dry sift the same as kief?
Dry sift is often called kief or pollen. When you grind your weed, bits of plant matter and trichomes are sifted and collected in a 4-part grinder's lower kief compartment. Rather than grinding, the dry sift method involves separating trichomes from the plant material. This preserves the trichomes and results in a remarkably pure hash that contains substantially less plant material than kief.
What is the best screen for sifting kief?
For quality dry sift hash, use sieves with progressively smaller mesh sizes. Use all three screens from 150 to 70 microns for premium quality hash.
What can you do with dry sift hash?
Sprinkle it on joints or bong bowls, press it into hash coins, use heat and pressure to make rosin, or decarboxylate (convert THCa/CBDa into THC/CBD by heating) for edibles such as baked goods or your own homemade infusions.
How to use the Dry Sift Screen Kit
- Prepare a large sheet of baking paper or clean a smooth working area.
- Stack the Dry Sift Screen Kit with the 150-micron mesh (larger holes) on top of the 90-micron mesh
- Put on latex gloves place a small amount of plant material on the top screen and gently move it back and forth for a few minutes. Trichomes will break off and fall through the holes in the screen.
- After sifting for a few minutes, remove the top screen. You’ll see a kind of powder on the second screen
- Stack the 90-micron mesh screen on top of the 70-micron mesh
- The second screen, with even finer holes, refines your material further. Gently spread the material over this screen using a flat, smooth object like a credit card or plastic scraper.
- The third screen, helps separate even smaller particles. Spread the material over this screen like you did before using a flat, smooth object like a credit card or plastic scraper.
- Once you’re done, remove the third screen. What’s left underneath—that’s your hash!
- Press the collected hash into a compact ball by hand or use a pollen press.
Tips for dry sifting
- How long you should sift depends on the quality of your cannabis or trim. The longer you sift, the more plant matter will fall through, leaving you with finer hash.
- Place your trim in the freezer for 24 hours. Chilled trichomes seperate more easily and freezing your trim locks in terpenes, making your hash more aromatic and flavorful.
