Instructions for growing peyote and other cacti from seed
  • Soil Mixture: 33% coarse sharp sand, 33% coconut fibre or peat moss, 33% loam or compost, and 1% calcium. The soil mixture should be sterile, free from harmful micro-organisms. Seedlings are susceptible to fungal attack. The desired PH-value lies somewhere between 6.5 and 7.2 (high calcium levels, low nitrogen levels). Place the seed directly on the surface of the soil mix.
  • Germination: The ideal temperature range for growing cacti lies between 20°C and 30°C; the ideal temperature is 23°C. At night the temperature should not drop below 18°C. During this phase of the germination process, the seeds should receive diffused sunlight which ideally measures up to 50% direct sunlight. Humidity must be maintained at 90% or above.
  • Watering: The container can be soaked in a bowl of water, or the surface can be misted until it is soaked through and through. The seeds will germinate in 7-21 days. Fast growers can be watered more thoroughly. Do not over water slow growers. 45 days after planting, feed with 7-40-6 fertiliser. Place the cactus in direct sunlight when it is approximately 0.75cm.
