What is Sceletium tortuosum?
Kanna or Sceletium tortuosum is a succulent commonly found in South Africa, also known as Channa or Kougoed, which in Dutch means "something to chew". Kanna has a long history of use. More than 200 years ago, the Khoisan people of southern Africa sniffed, chewed, and smoked kanna for its euphoric effects.

What is Sceletium tortuosum used for?
The most common reason people use kanna is for its euphoric and calming effects. The indigenous South African plant is widely known to promote a sense of well-being and relaxation. Some people use kanna to enhance their meditation practices. Bodily sensations are sometimes enhanced; some report increased skin sensitivity and even sexual arousal. Because kanna calms the body and mind, some people report feeling drowsy. Others report sleeplessness; if you're sensitive to energizing herbs, it's best to use kanna early on in the day.

Is Sceletium tortuosum an SSRI?
The most prominent active alkaloids in kanna are mesembrine, mesembrenone, mesembrenol and tortuosamine. Mesembrine, which appears to be the main molecule responsible for the subjective effect of kanna, is an SSRI (Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor), the same mechanism active in modern antidepressants. Kanna should not be combined with other SSRIs (Seroxat, Prozac) or Mono Oxidase Inhibitors (MAO-I).

Dosage & Preparation
Kanna 50X Extract is best used as a tea. Add 50-100 mg to a cup of hot water and stir. Use 2.5-5 mg as a snuff. Add to a joint, or vaporize at 188°C.
