Leonorus sibiricus or Marihuanilla is a plant from the Labiatae family. It is known by many names, such as Altamisa, Amor-Mio or I-mu-tsao. Marihuanilla can grow up to two meters high, forming long purple flower spikes. Leonorus sibiricus is, as the name suggests, native to Siberia and Asia. As time passed, Marihuanilla spread to nearly all other parts of the world, including America, where its use gained popularity. Though already well-known to ancient Chinese herbalists, the main psychoactive ingredients presumably responsible for the effect, the diterpenes leosibiricin, leosiberin, and the isomer isoleosiberine, were only discovered in the 1980’s. Marihuanilla is mostly added to a joint as an alternative to cannabis but is often prepared as a tea.
