Background
Muira Puama or Ptychopetalum olacoides is a plant of the Olacaceae family. It was and is still used by indigenous tribes of the "Rio Negro" as an aphrodisiac. In traditional folk medicine, it is also used to calm nerves and help ease anxiety. The active ingredients are still largely unknown, although the roots have been found to contain a mixture of esters composed of the behenic acid ester of lupeol, phytosterols, and an essential oil consisting of camphene, camphor, β-caryophyllene, α-humulene, and αand β-pinene.
