Description
The tobacco plant has a long, fascinating and controversial history. To this day, there are many proponents and opponents of the plant. Nicotiana tabacum, a member of the tobacco family, originated in the tropical and subtropical Americas. In 1560 a Frenchman named Jean Nicot introduced tobacco to France as a miracle cure-all and a protective remedy against the plague. In the Netherlands cultivation of tobacco began in 1610 and lasted approximately 350 years. Tobacco was chewed, inhaled (as a snuff) and smoked in a pipe. Until the end of the Second World War, nicotine, the active ingredient in tobacco, was a commonly used insecticide, but once its toxicity became apparent its use gradually declined. Recent research has shown that in low doses nicotine can have a positive effect on mood but paired with the health risks and highly addictive nature of the substance, its use cannot be justified. A beautiful addition to any home or garden, Nicotiana tabacum produces fragrant flowers and is not difficult to grow. Start germinating your seeds in March. If you plan to grow them indoors, place the plants in a warm, sunny spot. The ideal temperature for growing tobacco is between 20-30°C. Make sure the soil remains moist but not soaking wet. Outdoors, the tobacco plant can grow to a height of 3 meters.
