Background
Valeriana officinalis is a well-known plant, the root of which is used to make an extract with calming and relaxing properties. In Peru, Valeriana adscendens Turz is added to San Pedro brews. In North America, the root of Valeriana sitchensis is smoked on its own or mixed with tobacco. In India and Nepal, valerian is used as an ingredient in incense.
